Star Trails for a Red Planet

Does Mars have a north star? In long exposures of Earth's night sky, star trails make concentric arcs around the north celestial pole, the direction of our fair planet's axis of rotation. Bright star Polaris is presently the Earth's North Star, close on the sky to Earth's north celestial pole. But long exposures on Mars show star trails too, concentric arcs about a celestial pole determined by Mars' axis of rotation. Tilted like planet Earth's, the martian axis of rotation points in a different direction in space though. It points to a place on the sky between stars in Cygnus and Cepheus with no bright star comparable to Earth's north star Polaris nearby. So even though this ruddy, weathered landscape is remarkably reminiscent of terrain in images from the martian surface, the view must be from planet Earth, with north star Polaris near the center of concentric star trails. Video Shows Chicago Police Officer Body-Slamming Man During Arrest

Chicago police say they have launched an investigation into an incident that involved an officer picking up and slamming a man to the ground during an arrest in the afternoon of Thanksgiving. The body-slam was caught on video and it appears to show the man’s head landing on the curb.

The video practically begins with the body-slam, but police say the officer carried out what they characterized as “an emergency take down” after the man spat on him.

Chicago’s mayor, Lori Lightfoot, said that even though “a single video does not depict the entirety of the interactions between the police and the individual,” she acknowledged that “this particular video is very disturbing,” In a series of tweets, Lightfoot vowed that police would carry out a thorough investigation “so that the public may gain a complete picture of what happened.”

Police say the man, who was drinking alcohol in public at around 4 p.m., resisted several attempts to be taken into custody and licked the officer’s face, spat in his eye and mouth, and threatened him. The person who recorded the video said that she saw the officer snatch the man’s beer away and then pick him up and slam him to the ground while he was on the phone. “I was nervous. I was scared. I was hoping this young man was okay,” said Jovonna Jamison. She also insisted that the man who was detained “didn’t do anything aggressive—he just stood there.” The man was hospitalized and released into police custody “sometime overnight,” according to a police spokesman.

Brazilian President Blames Leonardo DiCaprio for Amazon Fires

Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro has accused actor Leonardo DiCaprio of giving money to organizations that deliberately set fire to the Amazon rainforest. Without providing any proof, Bolsonaro said DiCaprio was one of the foreign donors to the NGOs that he says are partly responsible for setting fire to the Amazon deliberately. “DiCaprio is a cool guy, isn’t he? Giving money to set the Amazon on fire,” the president said to supporters in the capital of Brasilia.

It was the second time this week that Brazil’s president criticized DiCaprio. “Leonardo DiCaprio, dammit, you’re collaborating with the burning of the Amazon,” Bolsonaro said during a Facebook live broadcast. Brazil’s president also accused the actor of being part of a “campaign against Brazil.” Bolsonaro has launched a broad campaign against environmental nonprofits that operate in Brazil, saying that their efforts are bad for the economy.

The president’s son Eduardo also got in on the action, writing on Twitter that DiCaprio donated $300,000 to “the NGO that set fire to the Amazon.”

The president’s criticism of the actor comes on the heels of police raiding the headquarter of two nonprofit groups that was accompanied by the controversial arrest of four volunteer firefighters who were accused of deliberately setting fires to aid their fundraising efforts. They denied any wrongdoing and a judge ordered their release.

As the Guardian notes, Bolsonaro’s attack against DiCaprio was met with derision and ridicule among opposition politicians. “How desperate,” tweeted Sen. Randolfe Rodrigues. “Our negligent and incompetent president – responsible for an environmental dismantling unprecedented in our country – wants to blame DiCaprio but won’t blame his own administration which is incapable of taking a single step without destroying something.” Another opposition lawmaker wrote that “Bolsonaro’s delirium has no limits.”

The Downlink: Europe Funds Planetary Defense Mission and Mars Sample Return

Welcome to issue 9 of The Downlink, a planetary exploration news roundup from The Planetary Society! Here's everything that crossed our radar this week. 

A new European Space Agency (ESA) budget funds Hera, a planetary defense mission that The Planetary Society supports. Hera would visit asteroid Didymos in 2026 after NASA's DART mission intentionally crashes into the asteroid's small Moon in 2022. This will provide precise measurements of the impact's effect on the moon's orbit, validating one possible technique to deflect an asteroid on target to hit the Earth.

ESA's new budget also funds work that supports another Planetary Society priority: Mars sample return. Under the most recent mission design proposals, ESA would provide a rover to retrieve samples collected by NASA's Mars 2020 rover, as well as an orbiter that would return the samples to Earth.

Other highlights from ESA's new budget include funding for two Lunar Gateway components: the ESPRIT refueling and communications module, and a habitation module that would be developed with Japan. ESA is also working on a large robotic lunar lander. 

Eagle-eyed Twitter users have spotted new high-resolution imagery available from China's Chang'e-4 mission to the far side of the Moon. The image library, hosted by the country's space agency, contains the full Chang'e-4 landing video, a video of Yutu-2 roving on the surface, and other goodies. Learn more about the mission here.

The Orion capsule NASA will use for the Artemis 1 test flight has shipped from Kennedy Space Center to Plum Brook Station in Ohio for environmental testing. Orion will eventually carry humans to the Moon, but it must first complete a test flight that will likely occur in 2021. Learn more about NASA's back-to-the-Moon Artemis program.

Data collected by Mars orbiters during the planet-wide dust storm that doomed NASA's Opportunity rover last year sheds new light on a phenomenon known as "dust towers." Dust towers are concentrated columns of dust that rise due to heating from sunlight. They carry water vapor high into the atmosphere, where it can be broken apart by the Sun's ultraviolet radiation. Dust towers may have contributed to the loss of Mars' surface water.

A new paper on Ryugu, the asteroid Japan's Hayabusa2 spacecraft recently departed after a year-and-a-half of study, suggests the asteroid's eastern and western hemispheres formed at different periods of time. The implications behind this aren't clear, but scientists will learn more after Hayabusa2 returns to Earth with samples from Ryugu next year. Read more about the science results from Hayabusa2 here.

London Police Shoot Suspect After Several People Stabbed in Terrorist Incident

Police shot a suspect after several people were stabbed near London bridge on Friday. A total of five people were reportedly injured. Although the circumstances remain unclear, police said they are treating it as a “terrorist incident.”

Police were first called to a location near London Bridge because of a stabbing. “A number of people have been stabbed,” police said. Video posted on Twitter appears to show that when police arrived people on the street were trying to pin down the apparent suspect to the ground at London Bridge. He was later shot by police. “It looked like members of the public were fighting with a man that was—it looked like he was trying to be pinned down onto the pavement on the left-hand side of the pavement on London Bridge,” a witness who saw the events through a bus window told CNN. “At that moment, I kind of saw—it looked like a shine of light come across from the man on the floor and I realized quickly it was a knife, the sun was shining on the knife. It was a relatively large knife.” And then “very quickly … it ended with the man being shot,” the witness said.

Another witness who was also on a bus said she saw police “wrestling with one tall, bearded man,” who at one point “pulled his coat back which showed that he had some sort of vest underneath, whether it’s a stab vest, or some sort of explosive vest, the police then really quickly moved backwards, away.” Neil Basu, the Metropolitan Police’s counterterrorism chief said the suspect was wearing what turned out to be “a hoax explosive device.”

A van and knife attack in the same area two-and-a-half years ago left eight people dead. Earlier this months, security officials downgraded Britain’s terrorism threat to “substantial” from “severe,” marking the lowest level since 2014.
